What to Expect at a Bar Mitzvah

Bar Mitzvah facility

If you’re attending your first Bar Mitzvah, you may not know what to expect.  Bar Mitzvah is Hebrew for “son of commandment”, and when a Jewish boy turns 13, he has all the rights and obligations of an adult.  That means that a Bar Mitzvah party is a coming of age ritual to celebrate their new manhood. After the age of 13, he will wear a tefillin every day, participate in synagogue services, and have a new place in the Jewish community.  Here is what you can expect at our Bar Mitzvah facility.

What happens at the Bar Mitzvah facility?

Usually the Bar Mitzvah begins with the master of ceremonies, who introduces the family and celebrator of the Bar Mitzvah.  Before dinner, a family member will recite the traditional Ha-motzi, a prayer and blessing.  The Ha-motzi is recited with Challah bread, which is passed around and shared with everyone.  After dinner, there is a mother-son dance in which everyone watches.  Afterwards, there will be a lot of dancing so make sure to wear comfortable shoes.

What kind of food is served at the celebration facility in Westchester?

Kosher foods will be eaten at the Bar Mitzvah, but depending on the family, the menu will vary.  Some foods that may be served include spinach and feta phyllo triangles, chicken Marbella, grilled salmon, and Tuscan crostini.

What should I bring as a gift?

Although all gifts are accepted, it is common to give cash as a present.  Checks are usually written in increments of 18, which represent “chai”, or life, which are numerically equivalent to 18.  $75 to $100 is an acceptable amount of money to give per person, but give whatever you feel comfortable with.
