DJ Versus Band: Party Planning

Music is an important part of any party.  In fact, if you employ a great musician or DJ, it will likely be the highlight of the event, as people will always recall the fun had on the dance floor.  Choosing between a live band and a DJ is really a very personal decision, but here are a few things to consider as you make up your mind.

More or Less Variety A DJ can generally offer a greater range of music, for the couple who loves country, adores classic rock, and can’t get enough R&B.  Though you may love the music played by a particular band, you have to carefully consider if they will be able to provide enough diversity in sound to please yourselves as well as your guests.

Price Point For most couples, there is a lot hinging on the budget, so if you have decided that you must get a lot for a little when it comes to entertainment, you may have to suffice for a DJ.  Even if you had your heart set on a live band, you have to consider the added price that comes with more people to pay.  Price your options, but in most cases, a DJ will always win when it comes to the financial bottom line.

Space Be sure that you ask the DJ or band how much space they require for set up.  Some DJs have a lot of speakers and some of those can be very large.  Similarly bands with numerous players can require a great deal of space.  It is important to consider whether or not the selection is wise, given the reserved venue.

Bottom Line Ultimately, the decision might just come down to the feel that you are trying to achieve.  While the DJ is less expensive and provides a wide variety of music, if you are going for a very sophisticated feel, you simply can’t beat a live band.
