Buffet Table Tips

Many of the best parties that we have ever been to included buffet-style eating.  While sit down dinners are nice, they do require a waiting staff and a lot of coordination to ensure that things go smoothly. Buffets can be simpler and more inviting for picky eaters.

If you are going to execute a buffet table at your next party, then do consider these tips to better ensure that it is a success.

Allow Ample Space There is nothing worse then feeling cramped and crowded while waiting in line.  So, ask people to sit in their seats until their table is called up to the buffet.  Additionally, keep the buffet table far removed from the tables where people are seated.  This will make it easier for people to move about as they fill their plates.

Carefully Consider Order of Operations Carrying a knife, spoon, and fork while trying to pile food on a plate can be tricky.  Instead, provide plates at the start of the table and cutlery at the end.  In this way, you can minimize the burden on guests as they walk through the buffet line.  Additionally, think carefully about how to arrange the food on the table.  You don’t want to have the dressing before the salad, or the gravy before the potatoes, for instance.

Keep Centerpieces Small and Sensible While it will undoubtedly make the table look more inviting, a large centerpiece can take up too much valuable real estate on the buffet table.  Opt for something small and attractive instead.

Label Food You don’t have to tell people every ingredient or how many calories are in each serving, but it is nice to label the foods, so people know what to expect, especially if it is something out of the ordinary.  It may also be a good idea to denote certain foods as “vegetarian friendly” or to alert guests of potential allergens in certain dishes, such as peanuts, shellfish, or eggs.
