Are you wondering how much you should serve at your party?

If you’re planning a party and you are in a budget, a great way to avoid overspending in food is to actually figure out how much should the servings for your guests be.

However, the first step to avoid overspending on food is getting your headcount right. The easiest way to do it, is getting people to RSVP to your event before you buy the food or request the catering service. But if you know for sure how many people will actually attend your party, you can also make an accurate calculation of how much food you will need.

The following guide is perfect for calculating your serving sizes per guest.

Food:

  • • For sandwiches, burgers, wraps and other main dishes, the correct amount of food you should get is 1 and half serving per guest.
  • • For side dishes, you should get portions of 1 cup and a half for each guest.
  • • If you’re serving fruits or veggies, you should get 2 large plates for every group of 25 guests.

• Every guest should get a portion of 6 appetizers before the main meal, or 12 appetizers if there’s no main course.

Desserts:

• For cupcakes or cake, you should be able to offer a cupcake and a half or its equivalent in cake slice portions to each guest.

• If you’re serving medium size cookies, each of your guests should have the chance to enjoy 3 of them, and if the cookies are small, there should be 5 per guest.

• Half a cup of candy per guest is the right portion for a serving if you’re offering sweets at your party.

• If there’s ice cream at your event, each one of your guests should get a cup of ice cream, regardless of whatever serving method or format you’ve chosen.

Drinks:

• If you’re serving alcohol at you party, aim to provide one and a half drinks per guest, every hour.

• Keeping in mind that people get dehydrated when they drink liquor, you should have 2 gallons of a non-alcoholic beverage available for every group of 25 guests.

Non-alcoholic beverages:

• If you’re party won’t be featuring any liquor, every batch of 25 guests should have access to 4 gallons of lemonade, juice, tea, soda or any other non-alcoholic beverage of your choice.

Remember that if you’re trying to save money, planning ahead is the best way to go and serving guest by guest will help you feed everyone without going over budget.
